Stephen Marter

2026 Supervisor of the year

Stephen was nominated by multiple student employees as their supervisor in the ENT Center!  Below are just some of the amazing comments included in Stephen's nominations:

  • I have been an employee under Stephen's supervision for nearly four years. As a supervisor, Stephen is both incredibly flexible and understanding when interacting with his employees, making him a reliable and communicative member of the ENT Center's box office. In my tenure at the ENT Center, I have never felt ignored, targeted, or unjustly treated by Stephen. He truly contributes to a fun - yet productive - working environment that I am grateful to be a member of. I nominate Stephen with the highest recommendation and without reservation.
  • I am nominating Stephen Marter as supervisor of the year because he is very understanding of all of our other commitments and class schedules, especially when things pop up last minute. He also offers good criticism and support when asked. He keeps the workplace modest, friendly and safe place to be yourself.
  • Stephen is not only a very helpful and put together boss, but he also offers a space to be yourself while at work. He almost always has a solution and will answer a question at any time. He is a great leader and fun to work with at the same time, and I always look forward to working with him.
  • I am delighted to nominate Stephen Marter for the 2025-2026 Supervisor of the Year award for his outstanding job as a mentor and a supervisor for the Ent Center for the Arts box office. Stephen has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication to both our team of PSAs and our patrons. He creates a create a welcoming environment, and ensures his team of student employees are supported and encouraged professionally and academically. He handles every interaction with patrons with care, patience, and flexibility.

Nominees for the Supervisor of the Year

Sabine Allenspach Photo

Sabine Allenspach

Beth-El Human Physiology/Nutrition

Ms. Sabine is nothing short of amazing. She is devoted, caring, compassionate and fair. She wants everyone to thrive, and created the A&P tutoring center to help that vision of thriving students and increasing success stories... Come true. Ms. Sabine kind and lighthearted manor makes her more than an excellent professor, as she doubles as a wonderful supervisor as well.   Without Ms. Sabine I truly do not think the A&P learning center would be as fruitful, structured/smooth running, or even still exist. Ms. Sabine is the ideal image of student employer as not only does school "have to" come first, but she will always make student staff know and feel comfortable/safe with her, when they have things going on with school, but also if they have life events occurring as well, she will be just as compassionate, understanding and helpful in accommodating for those special occasions, or doing everything in her power to help find a way to accommodate for it.

Tess Kyner

Excel Multiliteracy Center

Tess Kyner is a supervisor who strives to make everyone feel welcome and accommodated. She allows creativity to bloom in the workplace and is always looking for innovative ideas to improve our services and help UCCS students. I have yet to meet a supervisor, or a person, who is a more compassionate and driven individual than Tess Kyner. She looks out for every single one of her employees while handling several responsibilities at once like looking for outreach opportunities, education prospects, and handling student concerns. She also makes all of her employees feel heard and seen. I could not ask for a better supervisor than Tess Kyner.

Christian Johns

VCAF- IT Administrative Operations

A kind leader who listens and guides; providing us all the support we need to be successful both in our academic and professional lives!  Christian is, by far, the best boss I've had at any job, ever.  Right from the start, he makes it clear that you're a person first, a student second, and an employee third.  He fosters a very welcoming environment, not only to his employees, but also to any customers coming to the IT desk.  He keeps morale high and ensures that we actually learn things at work. The compassion he demonstrates to his customers and student employees is inspiring.  I have nothing but good things to say about Christian Johns.  A really good supervisor is someone like my current supervisor, who consistently balances leadership with approachability. He sets clear expectations from the start and makes sure everyone understands not just what needs to be done, but why it matters. What stands out most is how he takes the time to listen and actually consider feedback. He also gives constructive feedback in a way that helps you improve without feeling discouraged. At the same time, he trusts his team to handle responsibilities independently, which builds confidence and growth. Overall, working under him creates an environment where you feel supported, respected, and motivated to do your best.

Dr. Kirsten Ortega

LAS- English

Dr. Ortega works tirelessly in the English department to make both a fantastic environment in the classroom and the work environment. Each year, she is a key figure in publishing the riverrun Literary & Arts Journal, and continues to be a major advocate for its success. She works with students in the classroom, she works with us employees always, she works with other instructors and departments, and uses her every waking moment to help others. She is endlessly kind, devoted, and honest, and is a standout professor in the English Department and in the UCCS community. I have had the pleasure to be both in her class and to work with her, and while working under her, I have witnessed just how much she devotes herself to the campus community. She helps me manage outreach,--doing plenty herself--helps both of the student employees navigate student relationships and grading, assists and works in our meetings with the Student Media Advisory Board, and runs the classroom herself every week. All the while, Dr. Ortega has four other courses, her own research interests, and a family with two kids. All of this deserves recognition and I believe an honor beyond what I can give her besides my thanks.

Sara Plett

EAS Administrative Operations

Sara has been such a wonderful and caring supervisor to work with. Even though I may struggle at work sometimes, she is very accommodating with my personal health issues. I have never had a supervisor as caring as her, and I believe she is deserving of the recognition that this award comes with. By working as her student employee, I have grown tremendously as a worker and I have no one to give all the credit to but her. Sara is a kindhearted individual not just to her employees, but the students and faculty. She has established a safe, empathetic, and caring work environment for all of us, which is something you seldom experience at a job. Overall, I nominate Sara Plett.
