Angello Soto

2025 Supervisor of the year

When our previous front desk supervisor departed unexpectedly, leaving a noticeable gap in leadership, Angello stepped up without hesitation to assume the role. As our new front desk supervisor, he transformed a challenging situation into an opportunity for growth. His proactive approach and clear communication helped restore order and boosted the morale of the admissions team. I personally benefited from his mentorship during this period, as he shared practical insights into effective leadership and navigating the complexities of higher education. His willingness to invest time in developing emerging leaders has set a positive example for all of us. Angello’s professional excellence is matched by his personal integrity and passion for service. His commitment to fostering a welcoming, efficient, and supportive environment has made our admissions office a fantastic place to work. He is a role model for what it means to serve in higher education, consistently demonstrating that excellence in service and genuine care for others are the cornerstones of success. His approach to professional challenges and personal development has inspired me and many others to strive for our best. Angello Soto as a supervisor is not just a role. With me and the other student workers he treats us like his family. He doesn't only genuinely care about how we are doing as students, but also how we are as people. There's a level of comfortability that allows me to genuinely enjoy coming to work. He has built a culture within the Office of Admissions that makes anyone coming in feel welcomed into a family.

I am nominating Angello because he has been the best and most supportive supervisor I have ever had.  He works so hard to make sure that we feel supported and understood.  He supervises 10 of us and makes sure to connect with all of us and advocate for us as well.  He makes our office a better place. Angello is a fantastic supervisor in the Office of Admissions. He supports all of us employees in our jobs as well as in our academic lives. He is very understanding and so helpful. Angello brings his all every single day.  Ever since I started my first job in Admissions, Angello has been nothing short of  a supportive leader, dedicated not only to the success of our department, but also to the personal and professional growth of my coworkers and I. He lets us know every day how much he appreciates our work and keeps us motivated through thick and thin with care, kindness, and pure empathy and understanding for each of his student-employees. I would be hard pressed to find a better supervisor on campus or elsewhere with Angello’s work ethic and compassion for the people he leads. I am writing to wholeheartedly nominate Angello Soto for the Supervisor of the Year, where he oversees 12 student employees with varying job descriptions. Over the time I have worked under Angello's leadership, I have witnessed firsthand the incredible dedication, innovation, and unwavering support he provides to his team. His leadership style not only fosters a positive and collaborative work environment but also creates numerous opportunities for professional development.

One of Angello's key strengths is his hands-on approach to developing his employees - I can only assume that his leadership style comes from the mass amounts of time he has spent coaching basketball. He consistently takes the time to understand the goals, strengths, and areas for growth of each team member. Through this, he actively creates unique opportunities for us to expand our skill sets, often encouraging us to step outside of our comfort zones to take on new challenges. Whether it's through specialized projects, training sessions, or facilitating team workshops, he has ensured that our professional growth is a priority, and it’s been truly motivating to witness. In addition to being an outstanding supervisor, Angello leads by example, maintaining a positive attitude even in the most challenging situations. His approachability and willingness to listen make him an invaluable resource for all of us. He fosters an environment where every team member feels supported, respected, and empowered to contribute their best work. I have especially seen this attribute as one of the Leads at the Front Desk of the Office of Admissions. It is without hesitation that I recommend Angello for the Supervisor of the Year. His commitment to his team, his proactive approach to professional development, and his leadership in organizing office events make him more than deserving of this recognition.  Angello truly cares about the success and well-being of his student employees and the success of our University. Having him as my supervisor has allowed me to grow as a person, student, and employee. Out of all of the jobs I have ever worked, he is the best boss I've ever had.

Lillian Davis

VCEMSA Student Media

Lillian Davis has excelled as the Photography and Sports editor of the Scribe. She handles management of photographers and reporters with grace and is always timely with her communication. Lillian works seven days a week to ensure all operations at the Scribe run smoothly and regularly steps up beyond the bounds of her role to step in when help is needed. She has been a dedicated employee at the Scribe for four years and has silently held the organization together through tough times before I was even an employee here. Overseeing her at the Scribe this semester has been a joy and a privilege for me. Lillian's skills as a leader are remarkable and I feel as if I learn something from her every day. If anyone from the Scribe is worthy of recognition, it is definitely her.

Nominees for the Supervisor of the Year

Ale Ruiz

VCEMSA-MOSAIC

It is with great pride that I nominate Alé Ruiz for Supervisor of the Year. Alé has consistently shown transparency with her supervisees, including myself, and is proficient in having respectful discussions with the team. When she makes a mistake at work, she is quick and open to share her mistakes and to apologize. With her title as MOSAIC Coordinator, she excels in promoting and embracing diversity through her work with historically and currently marginalized UCCS students and community members.

Alé has always been a consistent, reliable, and helpful source for aid and wellness for UCCS community members. No matter what help a student or community member needs, she is quick to offer help and resources most appropriate for a given situation. While Alé is always willing and able to provide help to the team, she also gives space to her student workers to do independent work, which leads to essential skill-building. She excels in being a welcoming individual while also maintaining professionalism with UCCS students who come into the MOSAIC space, allowing them to feel more comfortable in the space, asking questions, and when utilizing our resources.

Bruce Ziegler

VCEMSA-Orientation

I have known Bruce for almost four years during my time as an Undergraduate Student Employee at UCCS and I have had the opportunity to work under his leadership, guidance, and supportive supervision. I strongly believe that Bruce deserves this award due to his ongoing commitment to supporting UCCS student employees, other staff members, and incoming students at our university.

Bruce has created a safe and welcoming work environment in the Orientation Program where he prioritizes his transformative leadership to all individuals he interacts with. He supports his student employees and empowers us to be strong leaders of UCCS that have the skills and knowledge to aid incoming students to our campus. Bruce plays an active role in helping all student employees grow within, and outside, their role. One example of this is through the guidance he has provided me in finding a job when I graduate with my undergraduate degree, while supporting me in pursuing my goals of attending graduate school. With this being said, Bruce has been an exceptional supervisor who prioritizes the 30+ student employees he works with in addition to prioritizing and supporting new and returning students to our university.

Christopher Foley

EAS-Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering

Dr. Foley has been a wonderful supervisor and mentor throughout our four semesters together with me being his lab instructor for 1503. I am proud to have worked with him to challenge these students and ourselves to do the best job that we could. Engineering at UCCS is not just a learning experience with Dr. Foley, but it is an interactive and fun experience.  I think I was very fortunate to have met and worked with him.

He fosters an environment of curiosity and innovation, encouraging students to explore new ideas while equipping us with the resources and confidence to succeed.

As a supervisor, Dr. Gorder balances leadership with approachability, taking the time to understand each student's strengths and challenges. He provides thoughtful and constructive feedback that enhances both our research and personal growth. His dedication to student success extends beyond the classroom and laboratory—he actively supports our professional development, helping us build networks, secure career opportunities, and prepare for the future.

Dr. Gorder’s impact extends far beyond his immediate students—he leads by example, demonstrating integrity, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. His mentorship has been instrumental in helping me navigate the complexities of graduate school, and he has inspired me to contribute meaningfully to my field. He goes out of his way to find opportunities for students based on their interests.

Stephanie Vigil

EAS-Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering

I have been working with Stephanie for over 3 years now and she has been such a supportive and crucial part of my college experience. She has been my go-to person for any questions or troubles that I might be going through. Her hard work and dedication to her role is truly inspiring and I look up to her every day. Throughout my personal college experience, Stephanie has been one mentor that hastruly allowed me to thrive and grow as a person. She trusts me with opportunities to complete work-related tasks that I would normally feel unconfident in. She has helped me become more confident in myself and the work that I am able to deliver, and I know that she has put the same faith towards mechanical and aerospace engineering students.

Stephen Marter

Aux-ENT Center Administration

I have been an employee of Stephen’s for over two years. Within those two years, there has not been one questions, problem, or situation Stephen has not handled with grace, acceptance, and understanding. His professionalism never wavers when dealing with patrons or rental companies. Behind the desk, Stephen contributes a lighthearted yet focused work environment where his employees find levity and support. Overall, Stephen is more than a valued member of the ENT Center: he is a phenomenal leader. I nominate Stephen for Supervisor of the Year with no reservations.

Eric Jones

LAS-Physics & Energy Science

Eric joined UCCS in Fall 2024, and although he has only recently started, he has already made a significant impact on my life by hiring me as a research assistant in the Biofrontier's Center. His passion for science and commitment to improving lives through his work on the microbiome for fecal transplants is admirable. Eric’s good-natured and honest approach to science is an ideal we should all strive to emulate. He has helped advanced my career and abilities as a researcher by fostering critical learning and expanding my network of fellow scientists, including colleagues at Carnegie Mellon and UF Scripps Institute. His contributions to the Physics department’s involvement in biophysics have been immense, especially at a time when the department was understaffed. Moreover, his efforts to invite research colleagues for visits and talks have provided other students with a broader perspective, and he has created valuable undergraduate research opportunities that help build essential scientific skills.

Sharla Windle

I’ve been working with Sharla since 2021 and she has always been exceptional. Even though she isn’t my direct supervisor she acts as such and she has made the office environment friendly, comfortable, and somewhere I enjoy being. She is amazing at training, happily answers any questions we may have and is someone I wholeheartedly trust.

Lorinda Lindemulder

She has been a wonderful boss to me over the past 2 years, and she has helped me in my application process when I graduate with my BSN degree!

Whitely Hadley

Whitley Hadley is the director of the MOSAIC center, and the spaces would not be the same without her. She is a bright light that uplifts everyone that interacts with her. Her leadership is integral to the continual success of MOSAIC initiatives, such as the MOSAIC scholars program and the MOSAIC retreats. Her dedicated support and charisma makes every day in the MOSAIC space a great working environment.

As my supervisor, Whitley has supported my intellectual, career, and creative abilities. As the Retreat Assistant, I've been encouraged to think out side of the box, develop confidence in leading meetings, as well as guidance for making meaningful connection with our student population. When I struggle academically, Whitley always lends an ear for me to discuss my problems as well as providing fantastic advise and research. I often refer friends and colleagues who have issues to meet with Whitley so that she can provide deeper insight than what I am capable of providing.

Not only does Whitley support my ongoing career development as a student staff, but has encouraged my post-degree ambitions. Whitley has proof read cover letters, written me letters of support, and led me through mock interviews. Without her insight, I would not feel as confident as I do entering the post-grad work force.
